Isolate part of your art, then move, copy or transform it. A selection limits where tools like fill and gradient apply, too.

Making a selection

Drag the Select tool for a rectangular marquee, or use the Magic Wand to select a connected color region. Tap outside to deselect.

Details & edge cases
  • The Magic Wand matches colors within a fixed tolerance, so near-but-not-identical shades can be left out.
  • The wand samples the active layer only — not the flattened image.
  • A wand selection keeps its exact pixel shape; the Select tool always gives a plain rectangle.

Move, copy, cut & paste

Drag inside a selection to move the pixels (they float until you drop them). Use the on-canvas buttons — or ⌘C / ⌘X / ⌘V — to copy, cut and paste. With Paste at cursor on, paste lands where your pointer is.

Details & edge cases
  • Moved or pasted pixels float until you drop them; switching tools commits the float.
  • Copy, cut and clear only affect the pixels inside the selection.
  • With Paste at cursor off, a paste lands back where it was copied from.

Flip, rotate & scale

The Canvas Transform buttons flip (H/V) and rotate the whole canvas as a drawing aid (view-only). To resize the actual pixels of a layer, use Scale layer.

Details & edge cases
  • Canvas flip and rotate are view-only drawing aids — they don't change your pixels or show up in exports.
  • Scale layer resizes the real pixels with nearest-neighbor sampling, so edges stay crisp.
  • Rotating a selection turns in exact 90° steps and swaps its width and height, with no quality loss.
